Component Preparation for Leaded Electronic Components – Precision Forming of THT Components

Even in an electronics manufacturing environment increasingly dominated by SMD and SMT technologies, leaded electronic components remain indispensable. Numerous resistors, capacitors, diodes, LEDs, transistors, power semiconductors, relays and other electronic components are used as axial or radial THT components. Especially where high electrical or mechanical requirements are involved, classic Through-Hole Technology (THT) offers significant advantages.

To ensure that these components can be processed quickly, precisely and reliably on a printed circuit board (PCB), they often need to be mechanically adapted before PCB assembly. This is where professional component preparation and component lead forming come into play.

Cutting, Bending and Forming Component Leads

The leads of electronic components do not always match the dimensions of the respective PCB layout in their original condition. Depending on the application, the component leads may need to be cut, trimmed, bent, formed or adjusted to a defined lead spacing.

Through precise mechanical processing, THT components can be adapted to the hole pattern and installation requirements of the printed circuit board. Both axial and radial components can be prepared according to drawings, samples or customer-specific specifications.

Typical component preparation processes include:

  • Cutting and trimming component leads

  • Bending and forming component leads

  • Adjusting and modifying lead spacing

  • Crimping and forming component leads

  • Preparation of axial and radial components

  • Processing of pins and component leads

  • Customer-specific cutting and bending shapes

  • Preparation for manual or automated THT assembly

These processes are commonly referred to internationally as Lead Forming, Lead Cutting, Lead Bending or Component Lead Forming.

Lead Crimping for Defined Spacing and Secure Positioning

A special form of lead processing is lead crimping for THT components. This involves creating a defined deformation in the component lead.

The crimp can serve several purposes. It supports the positioning and fixation of the component on the printed circuit board while simultaneously providing a defined distance between the component body and the PCB. This can prevent the component body from resting directly on the PCB surface.

Different crimping and bending geometries can be implemented depending on the component geometry, lead spacing, installation height and application.

Customer-Specific Component Preparation

Standard solutions are not always sufficient when it comes to THT component preparation. Different PCB layouts, component dimensions, lead diameters and installation requirements often require an individual approach.

Electronic components can therefore be prepared according to customer drawings, samples, datasheets or specified dimensions. In addition to existing tools and processing methods, individual bending tools, cutting tools and fixtures can be developed for special requirements.

This also allows unusual lead shapes or specific requirements regarding lead spacing, lead length, bending angle and installation height to be implemented.

Component Preparation for Customer-Supplied Parts

Our component preparation service is not limited to electronic components from our authorized manufacturers. We also process and customize customer-supplied components and third-party products.

This means that you can provide us with components that you have already purchased or sourced through other suppliers. We perform the required mechanical processing according to your specifications and return the customer-specific prepared components ready for further manufacturing.

This is particularly advantageous when existing supply chains need to remain unchanged while defined component preparation, lead processing or lead forming is required for subsequent PCB assembly.

Gentle Processing of Sensitive Component Leads

When cutting and bending electronic components, dimensional accuracy is not the only important factor. Mechanical forces applied to the leads can be transferred into the component body and may cause undesirable stress.

Suitable strain relief during component processing reduces this mechanical load. Controlled processing is particularly important when bending, forming or crimping component leads in order to prepare the components as gently as possible for subsequent manufacturing processes.

The result is consistently prepared and assembly-ready THT components for further electronics manufacturing.

From Small Quantities to Series Production

Depending on the component, processing requirements and quantity, component preparation and lead forming can be performed manually, semi-automatically or fully automatically.

This makes our component preparation service suitable for small quantities and special projects as well as recurring series production. Automated cutting and bending processes provide high repeatability and consistent component geometry.

The objective is always to provide a production-ready component that can be transferred to the next manufacturing step without additional manual rework.

Various Incoming Packaging Formats

Electronic components are supplied by manufacturers, distributors or directly by customers in various packaging and delivery formats. Depending on the component type and manufacturer, components may be supplied, for example, as bulk material, in tubes or in trays.

For our processing service, it makes no difference whether the components are purchased through us or supplied directly by the customer. The focus is on the required geometry and specifications of the finished component.

Delivery in Standard or Customer-Specific Trays

After processing, the customer-specific prepared components can be supplied in suitable trays and delivered to the customer.

Depending on the component geometry, quantity and requirements of the subsequent manufacturing process, we use standard trays or customer-specific trays. This allows the processed components to be arranged in an organized manner and provided in a format suitable for further processing.

Especially for individually bent or formed component leads, an appropriate tray solution can help maintain the defined component geometry during handling and transportation. At the same time, the components can be supplied in an organized format for the customer's next production step.

Component Preparation as Part of Efficient Electronics Manufacturing

Professionally prepared components can significantly reduce the effort required for THT assembly and PCB manufacturing. When lead length, lead spacing and bending geometry are defined before the actual assembly process, additional manual operations during PCB production can be eliminated.

This is particularly beneficial for recurring series production. Reproducible component preparation and lead forming simplifies assembly, supports stable manufacturing processes and creates defined conditions for subsequent soldering processes such as wave soldering or selective soldering.

Whether you need resistor leads cut, diodes bent, transistor pins formed, component leads crimped or complete THT components prepared to customer specifications, component preparation bridges the gap between the electronic component supplied by the manufacturer or customer and the specific requirements of the subsequent PCB assembly process.

Individual Solutions for Your THT Components

Do you require a specific bending shape, different lead spacing or a special lead length? Requirements for which no standard processing solution is available can also be evaluated individually.

Based on a component drawing, datasheet, sample and the required final configuration, we can determine which type of component preparation is technically and economically suitable.

It does not matter whether you purchase the required components from us or provide your own components for processing. From simple lead processing to individual component preparation and delivery in standard or customer-specific trays, you receive THT components prepared to meet the requirements of your electronics manufacturing process.
