Taiyo Yuden launches tiny, heat-resistant power inductors for the automotive industry

The Japanese electronic component manufacturer Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. has introduced a new generation of extremely compact multilayer metal power inductors. Among the 14 newly released components is the MCOIL™ LACNF1608KKT1R0MAB in the very small 1.6 × 0.8 × 1.0 mm size (max. height). The component meets the strict AEC-Q200 standard for automotive passive components.

Compared to the previous model (LACNF2012KKT1R0MAB with 2.0 × 1.25 × 1.0 mm), the new series is an impressive 49 % smaller – a decisive advantage for increasingly densely populated and more powerful on-board power networks in modern vehicles.

The new inductors are mainly used as choke coils in DC-DC converters in the following areas:

  • Engine control units (ECUs)
  • Safety systems (ABS, ESP, etc.)
  • Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
  • Instrument clusters and infotainment systems

Background: Due to the rapid spread of ADAS systems, integrated cockpits and high-performance computing modules, the demand for small, efficient and especially high-temperature-resistant inductors is growing enormously. More and more ECUs are now being installed directly in the hot engine compartment – temperatures of up to +165 °C are quite common there.

The new MCOIL™ LACN series meets these requirements: It operates reliably in the temperature range of -55 °C to +165 °C. Thanks to a special manufacturing process (oxide film bonding of metal particles by heat treatment), the components achieve excellent thermal conductivity, insulation and long-term stability – precisely what the automotive industry needs for future high-performance and high-density applications.
