JAE ST20 Series: Compact nanoSIM and microSD™ Connector Saves up to 50% PCB Space

With the new ST20 Series, JAE (Japan Aviation Electronics Industry) introduces an exceptionally compact stacked-tray combo connector for nanoSIM and microSD™ cards. By stacking the cards vertically, the connector requires approximately 50% less PCB mounting area compared with the previous ST19 Series.

The ST20 Series is particularly suitable for developers of compact electronic devices where cellular connectivity and additional storage need to be integrated within a minimum PCB footprint.

Two Cards in Minimum Space

The key difference compared with conventional combo card connectors lies in its design. Instead of positioning the nanoSIM and microSD™ cards side by side, the JAE ST20 Series uses a two-level stacked-tray concept.

The cards are positioned on the upper and lower sides of a common tray. According to JAE, this reduces the required PCB mounting area by approximately 50% compared with the ST19 Series.

Especially in space-constrained devices, this creates additional room for larger batteries, sensors, wireless modules or other electronic functions.

nanoSIM + microSD™ or Dual nanoSIM

Another advantage of the ST20 Series is its flexible card configuration. Depending on the application, the connector can be used for:

  • 1 × nanoSIM + 1 × microSD™
  • 2 × nanoSIM

This allows a common connector platform to be used across different device variants and configurations.

Compact Dimensions of Just 2.35 × 15.2 × 15.9 mm

Despite accommodating two cards, the JAE ST20 remains extremely compact. Its dimensions are only:

2.35 × 15.2 × 15.9 mm (H × W × D)

The connector consists of two reflow-solderable components – the socket and block – which together form the card slot after PCB assembly.

No additional mechanical connection mechanism between the two components is required. This contributes to the compact design and simplifies integration into space-constrained applications.

Designed for Compact IoT, Communication and Mobile Devices

The demand for cellular connectivity and local data storage continues to grow, even as electronic devices become increasingly compact. JAE specifically mentions smartphones, drones and dashcams as typical applications.

The ST20 concept is also attractive for a wide range of IoT and wireless applications where a nanoSIM card is required for cellular connectivity and a microSD™ card for local data storage.

Typical applications include:

IoT Devices · Wireless Devices · Drones · Dashcams · Telematics · Mobile Communication Devices · Compact Embedded Systems

Less PCB Space – More Freedom in Device Design

With the ST20 Series, JAE addresses a key challenge in modern electronics development: devices are expected to become smaller or integrate more functionality, while communication, storage and power supply functions compete for increasingly limited PCB space.

The combination of stacked-tray technology, approximately 50% reduced PCB mounting area and flexible nanoSIM/microSD™ or Dual-nanoSIM configuration makes the ST20 Series particularly attractive for new compact device designs.

Frequently Asked Questions about the JAE ST20 Series

What is the JAE ST20 Series?

The JAE ST20 Series is a compact stacked-tray card connector designed to accommodate two cards. It supports either a nanoSIM + microSD™ combination or two nanoSIM cards.

Which cards does the JAE ST20 connector support?

The JAE ST20 supports nanoSIM + microSD™ as well as nanoSIM + nanoSIM configurations. This makes the connector suitable for devices requiring additional storage or Dual-SIM functionality.

How much PCB space does the JAE ST20 save?

According to JAE, the ST20 Series requires approximately 50% less PCB mounting area than the JAE ST19 Series. This space saving is achieved by stacking the two cards instead of positioning them side by side.

What are the dimensions of the JAE ST20?

The JAE ST20 measures only 2.35 × 15.2 × 15.9 mm (H × W × D). Its low profile and small PCB footprint make it particularly suitable for compact electronic devices.

How does the stacked-tray design of the JAE ST20 work?

Instead of positioning two cards next to each other, the ST20 stacked-tray design places the cards on the upper and lower sides of a common tray. This significantly reduces the PCB area required for the card connector.

Can the JAE ST20 be used as a Dual-SIM connector?

Yes. In addition to a nanoSIM + microSD™ configuration, the JAE ST20 supports two nanoSIM cards, making it suitable for Dual-SIM applications.

Which applications are suitable for the JAE ST20?

The JAE ST20 is designed for compact devices requiring cellular connectivity and/or removable storage. JAE specifically mentions applications such as smartphones, drones and dashcams. The concept is also suitable for various compact IoT, wireless and embedded devices.

Does the JAE ST20 provide tray detection?

Yes. The ST20 Series features a normally closed detection switch for electrical detection of the tray status.

How is the JAE ST20 mounted on the PCB?

The JAE ST20 consists of a socket and block, both designed for reflow soldering during PCB assembly.

What design features improve the reliability of the JAE ST20?

The ST20 Series incorporates an anti-buckling contact design, protection against incorrect card insertion and retaining features designed to securely position the cards inside the tray.
