AIKE USB Connectors: USB 2.0, USB 3.0/3.1 and USB Type-C

Whether it is a classic USB Type-A interface, a compact USB Type-C connector or multiple USB ports in a very limited space, selecting the right USB connector depends on the required data rate, connector design, PCB layout, mounting position and mechanical requirements.

wittig ELECTRONIC offers AIKE USB connectors for industrial and electronic applications – from USB 2.0 and USB 3.0/3.1 to USB Type-C.

The portfolio includes various connector designs and PCB mounting options as well as single, dual and multi-port configurations. RJ45 connectors and other I/O connectors complement the range.

Which USB connectors does AIKE offer?

AIKE's USB connector portfolio includes solutions for different USB generations and connector types.

These include:

  • USB 2.0 connectors

  • USB 3.0 / USB 3.1 connectors

  • USB Type-A

  • USB Type-B

  • Mini-USB

  • Micro-USB

  • USB Type-C

  • USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2

  • Dual USB connectors

  • Stacked and multi-port USB connectors

  • Waterproof Type-C versions

  • Customised connector solutions

This makes the portfolio suitable for new product developments as well as redesigns and applications requiring an alternative to an existing USB connector.

USB 2.0 – Still Relevant for Industrial Applications

USB 2.0 supports data transfer rates of up to 480 Mbit/s. Despite the availability of newer USB generations, this standard continues to be widely used in applications where extremely high data rates are not required.

Typical applications include control systems, measuring equipment, industrial electronics, HMI systems and various peripheral devices.

AIKE offers different USB 2.0 connectors and PCB mounting configurations for these applications.

USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 – Higher Data Rates for Modern Devices

USB 3.x solutions are available for applications requiring higher data transfer rates.

USB 3.0, also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1, supports data rates of up to 5 Gbit/s. USB 3.1 Gen 2 increases the maximum data rate to 10 Gbit/s.

AIKE offers suitable connectors for applications such as computers, motherboards, industrial control systems and communication equipment.

Important: The USB version describes the electrical interface and data transfer capability. It should not be confused with the physical connector type.

USB Type-A – The Classic USB Connector

USB Type-A is one of the most familiar USB connector types and continues to be used in a wide range of industrial and commercial equipment.

AIKE offers Type-A connectors for both USB 2.0 and higher-speed USB generations.

In addition to single ports, multi-port versions are available for applications requiring several USB interfaces within a limited amount of space.

USB Type-B, Mini-USB and Micro-USB

Not every new development requires USB Type-C.

USB Type-B, Mini-USB and Micro-USB remain relevant, particularly for existing equipment, replacement solutions and redesign projects.

For engineers, it may therefore be just as important to find a mechanically and electrically compatible replacement for an existing USB connector as it is to select a connector for a completely new design.

wittig ELECTRONIC can support you in finding a suitable or alternative USB connector based on drawings, photographs, samples or available technical specifications.

USB Type-C – Compact and Reversible

USB Type-C is a modern, compact and reversible connector design. The connector can be inserted regardless of its orientation.

However, it is important to distinguish between the physical USB Type-C connector and the USB data transmission standard actually supported by the application.

A Type-C connector therefore does not automatically mean USB 3.1, USB 3.2, USB4 or a specific USB Power Delivery capability.

The electrical and mechanical requirements of the individual application must be considered when selecting the connector.

AIKE offers various USB Type-C connectors, including 24-pin versions as well as different SMT, DIP/THT, Right-Angle, vertical and Sink PCB configurations.

USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 up to 10 Gbit/s

For high-speed applications, AIKE offers 24-pin USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 connectors, among other solutions.

Depending on the specific version, SMT and DIP contacts can be combined with mechanical through-hole mounting features.

USB 3.1 Gen 2 supports data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s, making it suitable for applications requiring high data throughput.

Stacked and Multi-Port USB Connectors

Where several interfaces are required within a limited space, stacked or multi-port USB connectors can help reduce the required PCB and enclosure area.

AIKE offers, for example, USB 3.0 Type-A configurations with two or four ports integrated into a single connector assembly.

These multi-port solutions are particularly suitable for:

  • Industrial PCs

  • Embedded computers

  • Motherboards

  • Control systems

  • Servers

  • Communication equipment

  • Gateways

  • HMI systems

Combining several ports into one connector assembly can save PCB space and simplify assembly compared with using several individual connectors.

USB and RJ45 for Compact I/O Interfaces

In addition to USB connectors, AIKE also offers RJ45 Ethernet connectors.

USB and Ethernet interfaces are often required next to each other in industrial PCs, embedded systems, network devices, gateways and control systems.

Stacked or combined I/O concepts can therefore be particularly interesting for applications where several interfaces must be accommodated within a limited amount of space.

Contact us if USB and RJ45 interfaces need to be integrated into a compact design. Together with AIKE, we can evaluate a suitable standard or customised solution for your application.

Customised USB Connectors

A standard connector does not always fit an existing PCB layout or enclosure design.

AIKE has its own development capabilities and also offers customised connector solutions.

Depending on the individual project, the following characteristics can be evaluated or adapted:

  • Housing and mechanical dimensions

  • PCB mounting

  • Contact arrangement

  • Contact and shielding design

  • Materials

  • Plating

  • Colour

  • Packaging

  • Customer-specific requirements

This can be particularly valuable for redesign projects where an existing USB connector has been discontinued or where a second-source solution is required.

Which USB Connector Is Right for My Application?

At least the following requirements should be defined when selecting a USB connector:

1. Which USB standard is required?
USB 2.0, USB 3.x or another specification?

2. What data rate is required?
480 Mbit/s, 5 Gbit/s or 10 Gbit/s?

3. Which connector type is required?

Frequently Asked Questions About USB Connectors

What is the difference between USB Type-C and USB 3.1?

USB Type-C primarily describes the physical connector design. USB 3.1, on the other hand, refers to a generation of the USB data transmission standard. A USB-C connector can therefore support different USB protocols. The Type-C connector alone does not determine the maximum data transfer rate.

How fast is USB 2.0?

USB 2.0 supports a maximum data transfer rate of 480 Mbit/s.

How fast is USB 3.0?

USB 3.0, also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1, supports data transfer rates of up to 5 Gbit/s.

How fast is USB 3.1 Gen 2?

USB 3.1 Gen 2 supports data transfer rates of up to 10 Gbit/s.

Are multi-port USB connectors available?

Yes. AIKE offers USB 3.0 Type-A connectors with two or four ports, among other configurations. Multi-port and stacked USB connectors are particularly suitable for applications requiring a high interface density.

Are waterproof USB-C connectors available?

Yes. In addition to standard Type-C connectors, AIKE also offers waterproof Type-C connector versions.

Can AIKE manufacture customised USB connectors?

Yes. In addition to standard products, AIKE offers customised connector solutions. Depending on the project, mechanical and design characteristics can be adapted to meet specific requirements.

Can wittig ELECTRONIC help find a replacement for an existing USB connector?

Yes. To identify a suitable alternative, you can provide us with the existing drawing, manufacturer and part number, a photograph, a sample or the relevant mechanical and electrical requirements.
